The field trip is available to all Symposium attendees, although space is limited to 50 attendees. An additional registration fee of $85 (lunch included) is required for the field trip. All trip participants must wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants (no shorts). All necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), including slip-on steel toe covers, will be provided to each participant. You are welcome to bring your own PPE.

Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) And Black Hills Mining Museum

Arrive at Lead, SD: 10:00 am; SURF
SURF Tour: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm; Fan house, Hoist room, and Underground level (Steel toe boots required)
Lunch: 12:00-12:30 pm; Visitor Center
Museum Tour: 12:30-2:00 pm; Guided tour of Black Hills Mining Museum
Return: 3:00 pm; SDSMT Campus

Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF): In 2002, Homestake Gold Mine was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. In 2006, the Homestake Gold Mine transitioned into a dedicated underground research facility hosting world-leading physics, biology, geology, and engineering research experiments.

Black Hills Mining Museum
Black Hills Mining Museum: Go back in time and experience the Black Hills as the first miners did. The Museum is created by more than 140 Homestake miners and former mining employees over 30 years ago. This realistic exhibit is the only comprehensive look at both early-day and modern underground mining in the Black Hills, telling the story of the Western Hemisphere’s deepest gold mine.
